Sue, if you're using the beach at a western-style hotel or resort you'll be fine with a bikini as long as it's not an itsy-bitsy-teeny-weeny Brazilian style of bikini or 'thong' Similarly for men, at home in Australia (to the horror of my wife) I swim in speedo's, but I'd opt for board shorts in Oman, just to be on the safe side.
Generally in the remainder of Oman you should dress modestly. If you stumble upon a great-looking beach outside a resort and are considering a dip, have a look around at what other women are wearing - you know "when in Rome...".

Thanks very much to Phil and Ronsquality,
My question was on behalf of a non World-Nomads friend, planning her first Middle Eastern trip, and the time of year she will go is January. Yes I did advise her not to wear a too tiny bikini and really I don't think people should wear thong type bathers in a Muslim country. Even at a hotel or resort, some of the workers would surely be local? Probably Phil, not wearing Speedo's also would be a good idea in any Muslim country. They may after all think that you are a politician if you do. Yes I suggested to my friend that she wear shorts and a shirt over whatever bathers she choses, then assess the actual beach that she goes to and look at what the other are wearing. I do not think my friend is going to a resort, ronsquality...but I will tell her that info, thanks. I was thinking she could wear maybe surf type shorts, which are almost at the knee and some kind of T-shirt of sun protection shirt. Basically if she sees some other women in a one piece suit, she hopefully would be OK doing the same I hope. Therefore if every other woman has her arms covered, she should do likewise....A friend of hers from another country who lives in Oman told her she can wear what she likes, but I do not think that is sensible advice. Cheers and thanks once again for the advice. about 9 years ago
