Th is BY FAR the best place I ever found:

    Gelateria dei Neri‎
    Via dei Neri, 22
    50122 Florence

    Here's a Google Map link http://maps.google.com/maps?q=Gelateria+dei+Neri%E2%80%8E+&hl=en&ie=UTF8&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=42.495706,64.423828&radius=15000&z=13

It's not far from the main Piazza near the Ufitzi Gallery.

Never mind the tourist places, this one is the real deal - but there is, inevitably, usually a long queue! almost 9 years ago

Vivoli is supposed to be the best gelato in the world. I used to live there and i agree that it is one of the best i've ever tried. It's near piazza santa croce almost 9 years ago

Florence is the birthplace of gelato (Bernardo Buontalenti was it's daddy!) so when you come here, you just gotta fill up! Avoid the gelateria around the main tourist sites that have their gelato all piled up high and decorated with who-knows-what. This gelato has been pumped up with a lot of air and is not the real deal. The best gelato is dense, smooth and creamy. Here are some of my favorite gelaterie:
Gelateria dei Neri - Via dei Neri
Vivoli - Via Isola delle Stinche (near Santa Croce)
Grom - Via delle Oche (near the Duomo)
Gelateria Carapina - Via Lambertesca (near Ponte Vecchio)
Le Parigine - Via dei Servi (between the Duomo and Piazza Santissima Annunziata)
Gelateria Santa Trinita (facing the Ponte S.Trinita on the Oltrarno side)
Gelateria La Carriai (facing Ponte della Carraia on the Oltrarno Side)

... as you can see, I take my gelato seriously! :)
